Candidates

Only create-1-direction-object returns multiple candidates, and the count is derived from size, and cannot be requested:

≤42	64
≤85	16
≤170	4
>170	1

Cost is per call, so the candidates are free. Counterintuitively, generating smaller yields more candidates for less. But "pick from 16" is poor value once a 1-generation re-roll exists: forty re-rolls cost one 1dir call.
